Priests were not actually members of a guild, but
were a major figure in the Christian church in the Middle Ages. The priests were part of the church and were the “keepers of the
faith”. They were also one of the very few people that had the
knowledge of how to read and write (but some even
didn’t), so they were also the scholars of their times. They taught the people their religion and some even ventured through the
land and brought Christianity to the towns that they visited on their journey.
There were many different posts in the church for the priests. Some of the posts were for the village boy that was sent to the monastery
for an education and became a parishioner. Others were for the noblemen’s sons that became priests, which soon
became bishops. Priests were also
the closest to God, and for this reason they were also one of the most respected
people in the community.
